The Deal: you want long hair, then you must learn to maintain it. . This deal started around age 5 1/2 when my son did not want me brushing his hair anymore. He wanted to brush it. He likes his hair almost to his shoulders. . I explained that hair maintenance is important. If he wanted long boy hair, fine. If he did not want me to brush it, fine. It’s how we came up with the deal. . Part of the deal was if I have to keep asking him for a month to maintain his hair, then I get to cut it. Basically, once it gets too knotty, I cut it. Happens about once a year. . I think this year at age 7 1/2, tons of tears, I think he actually might get it. He talked about how he didn’t like his hair this short (it is a 1/2” below his ear). Short hair was him. . My response: remember this moment. Remember how you want to present yourself. Remember if you want your hair a bit longer, that is your choice but it must be washed AND brushed on a regular schedule. The brushing is important and must be done twice a day. . . . The before and after expressions of spending a night on the USS Iowa. . Mattress was firm. Noise level— you could hear ever sleeping bag zip, ever body shuffle and kid who need to walk to the head in the middle of the night. Lights out was 2200 lights on at 0600. . One of the worst sleeps but one of the best sleepovers ever.
